Magnetic At CIM UPC, we drive 3D printing projects focused on the development of innovative solutions with magnets, exploring new ways of manufacturing and integrating these components into advanced devices using additive technologies.

High Value-Added Permanent Magnets: Innovation and Sustainability through Additive Manufacturing

At CIM UPC we open a new stage in Additive Manufacturing through Material Extrusion (MEX) processes, such as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and pellet (granule) extrusion. Our research line focuses on developing new magnetic materials with controlled anisotropy, to manufacture “polymer bonded” magnets with performances close to sintered magnets, but with a sustainable approach and oriented towards the green and digital transition.

Using these technologies, we explore 3D printing of advanced magnetic compositions, where the microstructure and orientation of magnetic domains can be adjusted during the manufacturing process. This allows us to produce magnets with complex geometries, high functional performance, and a substantial reduction in the use of critical materials such as rare earths.

Our projects include:

Development of modified MEX print heads and platforms to apply magnetic fields during printing.

Formulation of new magnetic fillers and polymer matrices compatible with FFF, DIW, and pellet extrusion.

Reuse and valorization of recycled magnetic materials within a circular economy model.

Integration of control and monitoring systems for intelligent, efficient, and scalable manufacturing.

We are committed to advanced manufacturing that integrates research, sustainability, and technology in a single direction: next-generation 3D-printed magnetic materials for strategic applications in the renewable energy sector, electric mobility, and smart electronics.

In summary: high-performance magnets, manufactured via 3D extrusion, sustainable and ready for the challenges of the ecological and digital transition.
